Flying Flags Update

Flying Flags RV Park in Buellton has had a great amount of changes carried out.

Flying Flags RV park

We stayed at the Flying Flags RV park last week and had such a great time.  There have been so many changes there since we were there last. Dan Baumann who is the Manager has done a great job.  Well done Dan.  Dan by the way is now the deputy Mayor of Buellton.  Good job xx

The staff at the desk are the first people to greet you and their customer service along with free cookies and a great shop carrying some fabulous wine for sale could not be better.

Thank you ladies for making our stay a pleasant one.

New Kitchen

They have a brand new kitchen and they cooked some great breakfast for us.  They have a whole menu there and also on the evening we ordered a nice glass of wine too.  Wow! so fabulous.  The chef Matt is a genius cook and we really enjoyed the breakfast he made for us.

New Camp for upmarket tents

When we were here last they had new really upmarket tents that had been put up with luxury living inside.  We only saw one and now they have a whole village of them for rent and to stay in.  Such a fabulous idea and a great place to stay.  I spoke to a lady who had stayed there for the weekend and was really upset at leaving and going home.

This is what she had to say

Not only was the accommodation to stay in top-notch but the bathrooms and utilities were the best I have ever seen anywhere.

The swimming pool and jaccuzzi was just amazing and they are even now building another bigger swimming pool on the field.

Adding to the fact that the kids and adults can have a swim there were other added amenities for amusement as A fabulous bowling pitch for avid players of Bocce Ball.  Also great new bar has been incorporated out on the field right next to the Bocce Ball pitch along with a stage for evening entertainment at weekends.  We were lucky enough to have a great night listening to a fabulous band and have a nice pint to boot.  Great friends we had not seen in a long time were with us as well.  Just fabulous to see Darlene Bayer, Dan Baumann and Cathy Vreeland.  Thanks for a great night.

On our second night there we grabbed a glass of wine and sat around the fire by the reception area and listened to a guy playing guitar who was from Belgium.  You meet so many people when you are camping.  We had yet another great night.

We had such a great weekend at Flying Flags that we will definitely be back again soon and just cannot wait.  See you all again soon.

Weekend in El Capitan

We just had a great Weekend in El Capitan, CA

Weekend

It was the first time in our RV for a vacation away since we had the flood, it was just like putting on a comfy pair of shoes.  We really missed our RV and miss the lifestyle so much.  We talked to more people in that weekend than we had done living in the apartment for a month.  We just love the lifestyle of living in an RV and I don’t think it will be long before we are back in it full-time again.

Living in an apartment is nice and our apartment could not be better as it is very exclusive and high-tech.  The problem is that it is a lonely existence.  No one talks to each other, we can’t just sit outside the home and talk to passers-by and just really miss our friends that we made along our travels, especially friends made in Buellton, Lake Elsinore and Half Moon Bay.  Don’t be surprised it we end up back in our RV full-time again.

Weekend

Oceanmesa Campground

Oceanmesa Campground is a great place for a mini vacation away and was where we stayed and the reason that we stayed there was that the RV had to be picked up from the Camping world in Valencia after having new carpet put in in the bedroom and the side panel fixed.  Peter picked it up took it to Oceanmesa, then had to travel to Oxnard to still go to work. He then picked me up at 11pm and we drove there which was only about an hour away.  We wanted to go that night so that we woke up in the RV and then had the whole weekend there.

It was a great campground, easy to drive into the pull through spot and easy to drive out.  They had a pool and it was a bit of a walk but walking distance to El Capitan beach.  The other beach close by was a 5 minute drive which was Refugio Beach.

Refugio Beach is my favourite beach and we have been there many times before.

Weird

It was weird being in the RV without all my things around me and it really felt like we were camping.  When we lived in it full-time it just felt like a home.  This time the extra carpets i had on the floor were gone and all my pictures and things that made it look like home.  I really missed that when we were there.  At the weekend we had to really look and see what we had there and perhaps had overlooked when we moved out.  We really tried to make sure that all the things we needed for a weekend were in the RV and other things at home.  I think we nailed it as we did not really see there was anything we had forgotten.

Just look how bare it looks

Vunerable

I had forgotten though how vunerable at times you can feel in an RV,  On the Sunday night we were in bed and the wind pick up to extreme mph.  I could not sleep and at one point felt very scared. It was that windy I thought we were going to tip over. Peter was telling me that no way could it tip over.  We were right on top of the hill and there was nothing between us and the sea so we were getting it full blast.  I can tell you that in the 4 years we have stayed in the RV I have never felt so scared.

It doesn’t put me off though , in the morning we were outside having our breakfast, listening to the birds chirping and waving to passers by walking their dogs.

We love Camping xx

Flood in the RV – now in a Hotel

Can’t believe we have flood in our our RV.  We have had to move out of our RV temporarily due to a flood.

RV Flood

We have not been in our Rv now for a couple of weeks and we are really missing it.  We are staying in a hotel and after being in here for a few weeks I am now sick with a bad head cold which I can say I don’t think i was ever sick when I was in my RV with all the fresh air we got living that way.

We have had a massive flood in our RV.  Let me explain to you haow it happened so that future RV are not flooded this way.

In the shower we had a shower holder which had smart suckers that apparently work really well.   I guess they actually do not.

This baddy caused the flood

Flood

While I was out the shower caddy fell down and turned the tap on in the shower and hours later when I came home there was a water fall coming out of the RV on both sides.

We spent hours trying to clean up the water with the help of John our great neighbour.  It got dark really quick and we didn’t see till in the morning all the water that was still coming out from underneath the unit.  Peter and John unscrewed underneath to let all the water out and it went over Peter and he got soaked.  After letting it dry John screwed it all back up for us bless him we will be forever grateful.

We realized then that we would have to take the RV in for repair to access the damage.  The RV shop has said we need all new carpets and that one point by the door was really spongy.  We have had to get everything out of the RV that we could and have alot of our stuff in boxes at a friends garage.  The RV insurance company are to and froing with Camping world while they make their minds up whether they are going to do the claim or not.

It is a really scary time and I just don’t see what the problem is.  I really hope they cover it but if they don’t I really don’t know what we are going to do to get it fixed.  It is going to cost an arm and a leg.  If we have to pay then I may be asking you all for donations to help us during this difficult time.  We really don’t like to ask but if they do not cover the cost of repair then any help would be greatly appreciated.  I will kkep you all informed on what is going on soon.

We love our RV and cannot believe tht water like that can do so much damage.

Sorry I haven’t written for a while but will try to keep you all up to date with the flood outcome.

This is where we are staying at the moment.  Cheap and cheerful with breakfast included.  Most days it has only been $55 per night but at weekends up to $94.

Executive Inn and Suites

Anyway we are both ok so that is a good thing.  We hope you all had a great Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

Hummingbirds like the Marmalade Bush

Hummingbirds are such an amazing bird to watch,  they just love the flowers on the bush right outside our RV.  On the Mountain View RV Park there are tons of these bushes and I see hummingbirds all the time.

Hummingbirds

In England where I come from, there are no hummingbirds just flying around.  I am not an expert I just like them and they fascinate me.  I could just watch them all day they are fabulous.  When I have visitors from England they are just mesmerized by these little birds.

Hummingbirds are so tiny and quick at flying that you could easily miss them.  They flit, they fly, and they hovver.  The cool thing is though that when there is food around for them they stick around longer.

The humming birds hover in the air and use their beaks to get the nectar from inside the flowers on the bush that is outside our RV.  The bush is called a Marmalade bush and there are so many in this RV Park it is really pretty with orange everywhere.  The winter is coming so the orange petals are starting to fall to the ground.

We have a marmalade bush right by our outdoor grill.  We sat there barbecuing and just watched a hummingbirds come and feed, it is just an awesome site.

This was the hummingbird last night feeding from the marmalade bush.

hummingbird

When we lived in our house in Bakersfield, we had a couple of hummingbird feeders in the back yard that we kept full for them so that in the winter they had plenty to eat.  We had hummingbirds fighting over them it was so cool to watch.

Winter

I know that in California we do not really have harsh winters but have a thought for the hummingbirds when all the flowers have gone what are they going to eat.  Put out yourself a hummingbird feeder and then you can help them through the winter months.

Here is the feeder that we will be putting up in the winter ready to help them and this is the feeder that was in our back yard.  Just look at the hummingbirds they love it.

hummingbirds

Hummingbirds hovering around feeder

The solution that you put inside the feeder is sugar and water with one part sugar to four parts water,  boil the water to kill any bacteria let it cool and fill the feeder it is that easy.

Winter – 5 steps for your RV

Are you prepared for the winter nights that are drawing in?

Winter

Winter in Birmingham

This is what we left behind in England.  If we want snow we will go to the mountains to find it otherwise.

No thank you !

At night the temperature has started to drop, the clocks have gone back and it is dark now at 5.30pm.

We have been living in our RV full-time now for 3 years and to be honest have not had much of a problem getting through the winter.  We do have a few tips for you though.

Winter – Get prepared

Throughout the year we tend to use blankets, just sheets or home-made quilts that are in layers so that depending on the temperature we can put on or take off during the night.  Mostly kicking off all but our sheet during the summer .

We live in California so we find that the only time the temperature drops is during the winter months and at night.  That time is coming upon us and we noticed that the temperature dropped just the other night.  When this happens we switch out our blankets and put on our winter duvet.

1.   Duck Down Duvet

We have found the best duvet to have to keep you warm during the winter months is a duck down feather duvet.  It feels so light and yet is so warm.  We have been in freezing conditions in the past and yet we have stayed warm with this duvet.

Check out this video on how best to put you duvet into your duvet cover in a really easy way.  This can be done with just one person.

2.   Cover up your pipes outside

If you know that there is going to be some frost then you will need to go outside and insulate your pipes with slip foam rubber insulation.

3.  Cover up all outdoor furniture

You can get covers for you outdoor furniture and grills,  these can easily be taken off if you wish to use your furniture or grill anytime.  By doing this it will prolong the life of the outdoor furniture as frost can make plastic snap and break from the cold.

4.   Electric heaters

The use of electric heaters are great as they create less moisture in your RV.  We have our gas heater set on 60 so if the temperature drops really low at night then it just comes on.  Living in California has great benefits as it doesn’t drop down to that too much.  On our campsite Mountain View RV Park  the electric is included so that is great to use for heating.  If it is not then try to use both your gas and electric and split the cost of the bill.  Last year we needed a new propane tank every week to get us through the winter.

5.   Pull in your Awnings if you go out anywhere

When we went out today we did not pull in our Awning.  the winds picked up and all I could think about while we were out was. Wished we had pulled in our awning.  Get into the habit if you go out as the winds are much stronger in the winter and you may come back to no awning.

As an extra tip Become a Snowbird

What can I say we are snowbirds if you don’t want winter then move south just like the geese,  We are in Southern California and I thought today oh my there is a cloud in the sky it must be winter!

Halloween – dress up

Before I start telling you about our Halloween party last night, I just want to let you know that my first week at college doing my billing and coding course went really well.  I am thoroughly enjoying it and I got an  A  for all my work last week.  I am so excited I don’t ever remember getting an  A  when I was at school.  It is never too late to learn and although I go into the college to study you can do it right in the comfort of your own home.  Laurus college in Oxnard is where I am attending.

Halloween Party – Swing Dance Night

Halloween

Peter and Joyce

My husband Peter and I have only been at our new RV Park in Santa Paula Mountain View for a week and already we were invited to go to a swing dance night in Ventura, not only that but it was a Halloween dance where everyone dressed up so even better.

We are feeling really comfortable in this park and my only criticism would be that the spaces are parallel and not on a slant which would make it easier to navigate into your spot.  When this park was built it was not built for the big massive rigs that you see these days.  A poor older guy just hit a truck on his way into the park as he tried to navigate around the park and arrive in his space his poor RV and the Truck has taken a bit of a beating. Take those wide turns people stay right and wide.

Swing Dance Every Thursday in Ventura

Every Thursday in Ventura at the Golden China Restaurant there is swing dancing.  When it is your first time it is only $10 per couple then it is $10 per head following that.

We went last night and it was just fabulous nearly everyone was in costume and we will definitely be going again while we are living here in Santa Paula.

Wherever you live you need to get yourself out and about doing things.  Just because you live in an RV doesn’t mean you have to just sit in it.  Get out and about and do things.  If you can’t dance then go to lessons and learn,  if you’re not able to dance then just go and watch have something to eat and have a drink of your choice.  It is great entertainment watching some of the experts dancing.   It can be just like watching strictly come dancing on the TV.  When I’m not dancing I like to watch others it really makes you tap your feet even if you are not dancing.

We love to dance swing and rock n roll although we also like ballroom.  Peter and I first met doing ballroom dancing and it was over that time that evolved us into the relationship that we have today and after 21 years we still love to dance together.

Here are some of the other pictures of people dressed in costume at the Halloween swing dance. It was so much fun and we met so many people.
